What is vision AI?

Vision AI, also known as computer vision, refers to the field of AI (artificial intelligence) technology that understands visual contents such as videos and images and derives meaningful information for further actions.

Vision AI works like human eyes and enables computer programs to recognize and understand objects, scenes, events and patterns in images or videos captured by camera. Vision AI or computer vision can perform various tasks such as image classification, object detection, image segmentation, facial recognition, activity recognition etc.

Security and surveillance

Security is a paramount concern in today’s world, and advancements in AI have provided us with powerful ways to enhance safety measures. Vision AI has revolutionized the way security cameras are used. By leveraging computer vision algorithms and machine learning techniques, Vision AI enables security cameras to detect and interpret events in real-time, significantly improving situational awareness and response capabilities. In this article, we will explore how Vision AI is transforming security by enabling cameras to identify and respond to various events effectively.

In public establishments such as airports, bus stops, parking areas, railway stations, parking areas, security and surveillance cameras are installed. Using vision AI algorithms different security threats and suspicious activities can be detected and alerts can be generated.

Event Detection: Traditionally, security cameras capture and record footage, which would then be manually reviewed for any suspicious activities. However, Vision AI takes surveillance to a whole new level by enabling cameras to proactively detect specific events in real-time. Whether it’s detecting unauthorized access, suspicious behavior, or potential threats, Vision AI equips security cameras with the ability to recognize and raise alerts when predefined events occur.

Unattended object detection: AI can detect unattended objects such as bags, phones etc. Within the surveillance zone. It can track down bags, phones etc. that are unattended for a while.

Fall detection: Accidents can happen at any time. Places like escalators and wet floors can be particularly vulnerable, especially for children and elderly individuals. If someone falls down for any reason, vision AI can detect that event and trigger an alert.

Violence and Fighting: This subject is quite intriguing. Each act of violence presents distinct visuals. For instance, when two individuals are fighting, the visuals differ from a situation where multiple people (a gang) are engaged in a fight. Violence can take various forms or types. If one person pushes another, that constitutes an act of violence. Similarly, if someone throws objects indiscriminately in a public place, that too is an act of violence. And the list goes on. Vision AI technology possesses the capability to accurately detect each of these events. AI engineers and developers need to design, develop, and test algorithms for successful detection.

Stampede and rushing: In the event of an incident occurring in a public place, individuals tend to flee from the affected area, visually observed as a collective movement of people running in a particular direction. It typically begins with a small number of individuals, and over time, the crowd grows in size. Vision AI technology has the capability to track and monitor these activities, enabling the generation of alerts to security personnel in the event of such occurrences.

Fire detection: According to a report, In 2021, an estimated 486,500 structure fires occurred, of which 36 percent of the reported fires caused 3,010 civilian fire deaths (79%); 12,600 civilian injuries (86%); and $12.8 billion in direct property damage (80%).

With vision AI technology, it is indeed possible to detect fires at an early stage using surveillance cameras. To achieve higher accuracy, the appropriate AI model should be selected and trained with a large number of datasets.

vision AI technology holds immense potential for detecting suspicious activities and threats, thereby enhancing security measures across various domains. The ability of AI systems to analyze vast amounts of visual data and identify anomalies enables early detection and timely response to potential risks. By leveraging advanced algorithms and machine learning techniques, vision AI can recognize patterns, behaviors, and objects that might indicate malicious intent or pose a threat. This technology can be applied in diverse settings, including surveillance systems, transportation hubs, public spaces, and critical infrastructure, to provide real-time monitoring, proactive alert generation, and preventive measures. As vision AI continues to evolve and improve, it promises to revolutionize the field of threat detection and play a crucial role in safeguarding our communities and infrastructure from potential harm. However, it is essential to strike a balance between security and privacy concerns, ensuring responsible and ethical use of this technology to preserve individual rights and maintain public trust. Through ongoing research, development, and collaboration, we can harness the power of vision AI to create safer environments and enhance overall security standards.
